My students need a classroom pack of frogs, earthworms, and fetal pigs.

What comes to your mind when you think of biology? The first thing out of my students' mouths is "dissection!" My students are 10th grade biology students who attend a school in a high-need community. They want to experience biology like everyone else, but we do not have the funds to do so.
My students are expected to take a state sanctioned end-of-course exam in biology, yet they are not given the same opportunities to learn like more affluent schools give to their students.
It is time to change that. The students are ready to go, and ready to prove that they can score as high as their peers, effectively working to close the achievement gap between African-American students and White students. In order to help these wonderful students, we want to have the opportunity to dissect and explore different organisms to enhance knowledge of biological concepts. I cannot stand to see my students' disappointed faces when they hear we do not have dissection materials. Science is about doing, not just reading from a book, and these students are so deserving of a first rate education.
We are requesting three classroom packs of typical organisms that are used for dissection and exploration in most high schools. We would like earthworms, frogs, and fetal pigs. Each organism will teach students about a different type of organism, and they will get to explore what makes every creature on earth unique and interesting. My students live in an urban area, and often do not have much interaction with novel animals, and this set of organisms will also serve to expose them to animals that they may not have seen, such as the fetal pig. We hope that the dissection kits will allow us to increase our student achievement and our state test scores. It is vital that we improve and these will be one more weapon in our arsenal of student achievement tools.
This project is so important to us, because although education strives for equality, it is simply the fact that some schools do not have what others do, and it is unfortunate that these schools tend to be in urban areas.
Please, help me provide them the education that they deserve. Every student should have the opportunity to experience biology in a hands-on way!
