This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you remember staring out the window and wishing you could be outside as a child in class? My urban students need an outdoor learning environment from which to explore hands-on science.
My inquisitive, intelligent students live in a high-poverty, urban setting in Virginia.
They love to learn, but don't love to sit at a desk inside all day! We try to spend a lot of time exploring, engaged in hands-on activities. My students also need to practice showing responsibility by being in charge of their own projects.
My Project
I would love to create an outdoor classroom with weather equipment and a garden, so that my students can engage in hands-on science experiments outdoors. This will foster a sense of personal responsibility, as they prepare the soil, tend the garden, and observe plants grow. This will also help them to invest themselves in engaging scientific observation and allow them to track and graph their plants' growth, and the weather that affects it. We will also use their plants as a springboard for discussion of healthy eating.
My students need to get outside and see for themselves how things work.
In our urban setting, they rarely get to observe real life cycles. An outdoor classroom will enable them to apply scientific concepts they must learn, and will foster a sense of responsibility.
