It's almost time to start summer school, and my 7th and 8th grade math classes still lack some BASIC resources for the upcoming school year. The few math compasses we have are shoddy and dangerous. My classes (one of which has 40 students!) also need protractors and other supplies. Please help!
I am the entire 7th and 8th grade math department at my school -- with two 7th-grade classes of 30 each and one 8th-grade class of 40!
Fortunately, my students are committed and kind, passionate about their educations and dedicated to their futures. Unfortunately, my school does not have the resources to provide supplies for every student. Additionally, our students tend to come from families who are working hard just to make ends meet; scientific calculators and protractors often don't make the cut.
My students and I go to work every day at a college preparatory charter middle school, with a school day from 8-to-5, summer school (starting soon!), and Saturday school. The idea is that 5th-grade students who are coming in our doors an average of about two years behind grade level need extra time to catch up. So that is exactly what we provide.
My students make a huge commitment to education (homework EVERY night!) and they DESERVE the supplies necessary for a grade-level education.
Here's what we could really use for the upcoming year:
*A class set of protractors
*A class set of compasses
*Enough scientific calculators for every two students to share
*Grid poster paper
*A class set of Algebra Tiles.
Here's why these are the essentials:
According to state (and national) standards, 7th and 8th grade students need to be able to work with properties of shapes and angles, drawing figures and measuring for accuracy. Protractors and compasses are simply a must-have for students to meet these standards. We have a few compasses now, but they are the old style, with a sharp metal point, and the mechanisms to hold the pencils don't work well. I would like to provide safe, rubber-pointed compasses for all my students.
We will quickly get passed order of operations, and my students DESERVE to work with scientific calculators before high school. Period.
The grid paper is for group graphing projects. And Algebra Tiles are THE BEST WAY for students to learn Algebra visually.
These math supplies are not luxury items.
Your donation would allow my students, who work SO hard day after day after day to get a quality education and gain entrance into a high-performing high school, the opportunity to use supplies that students in wealthy schools and districts take for granted.
WE will not take these supplies for granted. They will not sit on a shelf. They will be used often, and used with love and care -- by my students this year and in years to come.
