The challenges my students face are great. All my students come from tough backgrounds where failing is the usual background. Obesity, self-esteem issues, poor grades, and an unwanted attitude are just a few of the obstacles my kids face. A healthy lifestyle could be the key for their locks.
My students come from diverse populations.
The majority of them are African American, Hispanic, or Asian. All are on the free government lunch plan and come from incomes that are way below the average income in America. In front of our building we have crime, gangs, violence, drugs, as well as a few unfortunate homicides. I try to keep my kids away from these deterrents through sports and activities. The New York streets that are in front of our school and their neighborhoods are tough and influential. Keeping students in the building for the first hour after school is vital for them to succeed. My students are passionate kids who love sports and activities. Sports provide my kids with motivation and inspiration besides a healthy mind and body. They deserve the chance to better themselves.
My Project
The "Wellness Room" will provide a place that my students can positively spend their time before, during, and after school. Athletes will improve their ability, weight challenged teens will improve their self concept, inactive kids will become active, and most importantly it will give a purpose to all that use it. My Principal just gave me a room for my vision, but unfortunately we have a very limited budget for equipment. The school will pad the floor, which is a great start, but we need actual exercise equipment. This is why I'm asking the generous donors for some most important contributions. We are looking for some ab wheels, weighted jump ropes, and weighted basketballs for some general cardio/muscular endurance workouts. Adding free weights will help with resistance training for muscular strength and endurance. We would like a few different sizes of dumbbells for progressive reasons, as well as a rack for organization. The equipment will be used every day and will benefit hundreds of students.
The "Wellness Room" will impact the students' lives forever.
We're not talking about a one hit wonder. In our location HS is so volatile. Lives either change for the best or the worst. They lack so much, and with a little help through programs like a wellness center, we can make a difference that will last forever. We expect the center to help with weight control, improve poor grades, form healthy habits, and create unity. The benefits will be endless and smiles will be significant.
