My students have been asking to be offered a Drama course. I approached my administration with the need, and they readily accepted. We now have students signed up for 3 sections. We will be going between the classroom and auditorium, a Netbook would allow us to use the projector already available.
The students in this district are overwhelmingly low-income.
School is a place where they come to be fed, to be safe, and to enjoy themselves. Because the students usually don't have access to a lot of technology at home, as a teacher, I strive to incorporate as much of these resources into my curriculum as possible. This helps them keep up-to-date on the latest resources available. I also find that comprehension increases when technology is used. The students enrolled in the middle school in which I teach are in 7th and 8th grade. These are difficult ages with many changes taking place.
My Project
This will be the first year that our Middle School will offer a Drama course. At first, there was only going to be one section offered each semester. Now, however, we have enough students signed up to offer three sections per semester. During this class, we will be traveling back and forth between the classroom and the auditorium. The auditorium already offers a overhead projector. Being able to have a Netbook to take advantage of the projector would be such a valuable tool. Not only could it be used for PowerPoint presentations and classroom notes, but also for watching various plays and musicals. Knowing that this generation of students are so in tune to technology, comprehension greatly increases when this technology is included into the curriculum. A Netbook would help our newly formed Drama program to become much more effective.
Being able to offer a Drama program at the middle school level is so exciting!
This program is going to become a outlet for students to learn more about themselves and channel their feelings productively. A Netbook would be such a valuable asset to this program, allowing technology to be incorporated into the Drama curriculum and leading to greater comprehension. This program will provide more opportunity for students to show their creativity and giftedness.
