My Students

Our school wants to create a fun, memorable learning opportunity for our English Language Learners. We have the resources for a reading program this summer. We want to reward our students who attend by bringing soccer equipment for them to play afterward!

These English Language Learners are Burmese, Karen, and Hispanic students from grades pre-k through 5th grade.

They attend a public school offering daily English services during the school year so that they can become fluent in English. They will benefit having daily interaction with Native English speakers speaking and reading this summer so that they retain the language they've learned this year and can continue next year where they end the school year.

My Project

Besides offering a fun, memorable program including reading and soccer this summer for our students, this is a great opportunity to interact with the families of these children. We would like to acquire soccer balls, goals, and pinnies (youth tank-type jerseys) to allow students to play soccer after coming to the voluntary reading program. Our Burmese, Karen, and Hispanic children love to play and watch soccer. We want not only for the students to become active, fluent, successful members of society, but also for the family members to become active and successful. I think this program including reading and soccer will help cultivate relationships with families so that parents and children will become successful and independent. We will be able to build trust, and in turn, be able to share with them knowledge they need to succeed here. We may be able to help them link with community resources to help them become independent and fluent in the future, as well.

I'm so excited for my students to become fluent in English, verbally, and in print.

This summer reading program is a fantastic opportunity for my students to practice English this summer. With the added incentive to play soccer, a sport they love, they'll be eager to attend the program. We've met their families, and they've begged us to come back to build relationships with them. Parents value our words, yearn to learn about our culture and desire that their kids receive a great education.
