Connecting With Music in Classroom Guidance

My Students

Do you have a special song that takes you back to a memorable time in your life? Music draws out emotion. In addition, when we can attach emotional value to the things we learn, we tend to remember the information better.

We have great kids at our middle school.

They are creative, outgoing, and demand the best from their teachers. Like most adolescents, music inspires them. They multi-task and can often be found listening to their iPod, checking their Facebook page, Chatting online, texting on their phone, and watching TV all at the same time. It is maddening to them when school does not move at the same pace as their life. Like most adolescents they are self-conscious and searching for the key to their self-esteem. Therefore, in my classroom guidance lessons it is vital that I create an atmosphere where they are comfortable enough to discuss topics addressing personal/social, career, and academic goals.

My Project

My plan is to create lessons that are accompanied with specific, thoughtfully picked music. For each lesson I would like to create a folder on an iPod and then use the remote that comes with the SoundDock Speakers to seamlessly infuse music at the beginning of the class period, during transitions, to encourage discussions, and in ending the class period. What an awesome feeling to walk out of class with great music playing and a positive attitude to take you through the day! The standards I address in my school counseling curriculum are essential skills in becoming a healthy, productive member of society. The students need to understand these essential skills. I must "speak their language" and pack each guidance lesson with engaging activities. Music will help to draw their attention to each lesson. Also, it will improve transitions and ease tension when addressing topics that may be sources of insecurity.

Students learn in so many different ways.

As educators we must meet them where they are and take them to so many places. I want students to enjoy learning. Combining thoughtful lesson planning with music with which they can connect will undoubtedly reach even the toughest student. Hopefully, each music-infused lesson will help me to connect with students even more and perhaps will be the difference for some in making the decision to come to me in a time of need.
