Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 10 students in a special day class for severely impaired children (SDC/SI) at Horace Mann Middle School. My students are cognitively impaired and have Down's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, or autism. My students really enjoy cooking, but many of my students cannot read and have a very limited vocabulary.
Since schools no longer have working kitchens, what you can cook is limited to microwaving or hot plate cooking. In this proposal, I am asking for your support to purchase a convection oven, so that we could do baking and browning activities.
The project will benefit all my students by reinforcing the core curriculum and teaching life-long skills that can easily and creatively connect with subjects like math, reading, science, social studies, geography, health and consumer awareness. I would rather teach fractions by increasing or reducing a recipe than the traditional method due to the low cognitive level of my students (the students learn better visually and with concrete examples)
It will emphasize hands-on learning that boosts self-esteem and strengthens resiliency. By learning cooking and food preparation skills, children gain responsibility and feel more independent and capable of helping to prepare meals and contribute to the family mealtime.
This activity will also promote better understanding and tolerance of other cultures by emphasizing how foods taste and encouraging children to sample foods of the many ethnic groups and cultures found in our school and community. It will also strengthen family ties by highlighting family meals as a time of sharing, bonding and passing on cultural and family traditions
Besides learning how to prepare basic foods, we will create a visual cookbook for non-readers. My students enjoy being independent as much as possible, and this is another way to for them to be like the other students.
