My classroom is housed in a regular elementary school. I work with children who are profoundly and severely disabled with physical disabilities including blindness. These students best learn by exploring their environment freely which necessitates specialized equipment and individually designed environments. We are following a curriculum called Active Learning which is designed for children developmentally below 48 months. The children are included in activities with their same age peers in classes such as music. We have a need for adapted learning environments which would encourage our children to activiely explore their environment and begin to move independently. These materials must be stable as the children's uncontrolled movements displace materials and cause them to disappear from child's reach. Items need to be attached even on an uneven surface without the worry that they will crash to the floor disturbing the whole class. Our elementary school will have 5 Life Skills classes next year. We hope to develop one large Motor Room where each of the children will have time to develop those skills necessary for success in moving independently. The materials necessary for this program include climbing and balance materials where children with even visual impairments will explore and build memory as they move their bodies with the aid of adapted equipment. I believe All children can show measureable progress in their learning when given the right tools.
