A kindergarten classroom is filled with music, songs, dance and movement. A CD player would be a welcome addition to an early childhood classroom. As a Kindergarten teacher I use a variety of CDs to introduce and teach concepts and skills through music. This auditory skill is most valuable for those learners who need to hear as well as see and touch. CDs are used during and with many different activities such as movement, gross motor skills, as well as finger plays, songs for teaching skills (ABC's Sounds, Vowels, Days of the Week, Months of the Year etc.) relaxation, stories as well as music to rest by.
My kindergarten students are very active five and six year olds. We are a Pre-K through third grade elementary school. Our school and community are recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Funding has been cut due to the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Money for replacing old or broken items are not available. Many of our displaced families still need financial support. Our free and reduced student population has increased from 24% to 27% since the beginning of the school year.
A CD player will provide a variety of auditory skills that some children need in order to learn. All students will have the opportunity to use the CD player in whole group activities, at the listening center for small groups or individually. Music is a vital part of our daily routine of learning and instruction. A CD player would also benefit the many performances my class does throughout the year. These performances are designed to give our young students a chance to speak in front of an audience. This builds their self confidence and speaking voice. I record and use many songs we learn for our units. We also have an end of the year program that is very popular with the parents.
Truely this is one teching tool that no Kindergarten class can do without. We really do "Sing to Learn" every day. Each child can be self motivated to learn with the variety of materials available for them to use. Your generosity will be greatly appreciated.
