I work for a middle to low-income school in Summerville, South Carolina. I teach 6th grade language arts, and in the past we as a school have struggled with our low-income students' reading scores on the PACT (South Carolina's Standardized Test). Recently, our district allowed me to use a resource called "The Comprehension Toolkit" by Stephanie Harvey and Anne Goudvis. This toolkit provides 26 scripted lessons and ideas as well as support materials that were a hit in my classroom. The kit provides teachers with strategies and materials that help students improve their reading comprehension, especially within the nonfiction genre. This is a program that clusters the 6 reading strategies into individual lessons. My students responded to these lessons in a way that really opened my eyes. They took ownership in their reading. The district is not going to be buying site licenses for the toolkit, so each teacher (if they want the kit) will have to buy one on their own. I believe in this program; I have seen it work. I want my students to leave the 6th grade with the tools necessary to compete not only in the 7th and 8th grades, but in the world as well. Being able to read and read well is a learned trait; it is something I believe in. This toolkit will help me get those struggling readers to the next level.
