Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have been fortunate to receive basic materials from my school site. I can obtain anything from paper to colored pencils, and even binders for my students. However I still feel limited in the productivity level my students can achieve without a printer in the classroom. I currently have 3 computers, and 34 students. I can work around this by sending my students to the computer lab, or to neighboring classrooms, but they still cannot print their work. The closest printer to my room is a 5 minute walk from my room, and it isn't always available, nor is it feasible to send my students to that area during class time. I know that a printer in the classroom would permit us to do more with the technology such as print research, Word documents, online Math worksheets, and Science data.
I teach Math, Science, and Social Studies at El Sereno Middle School, in Los Angeles Unified School District. The surrounding community is vibrant and lively. Many of my students come from a Latino background, about 98%. Our school has quite a few transient students, meaning that out of circumstance or necessity, many students have had to move around a lot in their early years. Our school also struggles with ongoing gang violence and activity all around our community. It is not uncommon for my students to talk about relatives or friends who are affiliated with gangs. However, I have been lucky to encounter much parental support and participation. Nearly every student in my class qualifies for a free or subsidized lunch. My students are mostly low income, many of them living in nearby housing projects.
Every student will have access to this printer, to enrich their educational experience and facilitate more use of our computers. The materials that will be needed will be the printer itself, printer cartridges, paper, a USB cord, and a printer cover.
The use of a printer in the classroom will make the use of our computers more meaningful, allowing students to print their work and research, and be able to proudly present and display this work to other classrooms. The use of a printer will also make it easier for me to assign online work, and integrate technology further into the classroom. I can use the computers more for all three subjects that I teach. Students will be able to conduct research, do online assignments, and print compositions.
