Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are an elementary school located in Corona, Queens. Each year our school puts on a very large school show at the end of the year. It is an experience that returning students talk about years later. As the music teacher, I am the director/choreographer of the show, but it is the children themselves who take on all the jobs involved in putting on a successful performance. Not only are the children the performers, they also are the stagehands, lighting crew, and curtain controllers (a much in demand position!) The children also make the hand painted scenery. The lessons the children learn are, I think, just as important as reading and writing. They learn teamwork. They learn how to support each other, and they learn they have talents they never knew of.
Our school is in an economically deprived area with over 90% of our children eligible for free lunch. They have been wearing the same shirts to perform in for the last three years and they are beginning to fade. This year the title of our show is "Color Our World", featuring songs with "colors" in the title. I would like to purchase white t-shirts which we will tie-dye for the children to wear to perform in. Our fifth grade teachers have offered to make the tie-dying a class project. There will be about 110 children involved in the show - from Kindergarten though the fifth grade.
I believe the shirts will make the show experience even more memorable to them and give them a keepsake to treasure.
We would need 15 Childrens' Large, 25 Adult Small, 35 adult medium, 30 adult large, and 5 adult X-large.
