Exploring The Linguistic Turn: History Through Literature

My students need classic literature to enhance their study of history.

My Students

An American citizen is relocated to an internment camp during war. An Englishman travels up a river and on a metaphorical journey on a quest for civilization. A counter culture rebel journeys along blue highways. These stories texture and nuance the study of history.

I teach and my students learn in a socio-economically depressed school district with a zero budget and no monies for what I consider to be essential resources.

That said, our school is also the Magnet school for gifted students which graduates 100% of its students, over 97% of whom attend college. These young people are engaged, committed and purposeful students. And they crave the opportunity to think creatively, to approach their studies from a variety of directions.

My Project

"Farewell To Manzanar" is a first-person account of a young woman and her family whose experiences in a U.S. internment camp illuminate a war-torn society wrestling with the tension between security and liberty. "Heart of Darkness" speaks to European imperialism and to the very nature of civilization. Tom Wolfe's story of Ken Kesey's binging road trip lays the foundation for understanding the 'beat generation' that was a prelude to the protest movements of the 1960s. These works of literature and non-fiction take students beyond the textbook and into the personal worlds of participants and authors living in specific historical contexts. They bring history to life and enable young people to live and walk in times and places not their own, to play Atticus Finch through history, as it were. And that ultimately translates into open-minded global citizens.

These resources will enhance teaching and learning for my students for years to come, and I very much appreciate your consideration of this project.

As a purist and positivist historian, I ultimately don't believe you can 'do' history through literature, but I also absolutely believe that the way these classic works tell some of the stories of history bring that history to life in ways that textbooks cannot. Your donation will serve a grand purpose.
