Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello. I'm an Eighth Grade Language arts teacher in the Bronx. Next month, we are beginning literature circles, where students will read and discuss books in small groups. Our big problem is that we have a lack of compelling books in our library. My students have a difficult time connecting to the great deal of historical fiction and classics in our classroom. Just as we as adults like to choose interesting and exciting books for our book clubs, my students too will benefit from having books that are aligned to their tastes.
Our class literature circles will be conducted much the way an adult book club would be. Students will work in small groups where they and their partners will all be reading the same book. Rather than simply answering prompts and taking tests on the books, students will have lengthy, in-depth conversation surrounding the themes and characters in the books. Many of my students are extremely reluctant to read, (more than half report having fewer than ten books at home!) so having very high-interest texts is imperative to their wanting to be active in literature circles. Learning to discuss a text in detail will help them in my class, in high school, and beyond.
I am asking for 8 sets of five high-interest books to use in our book clubs in my two Language Arts classes. These books are on different topics and different levels so that every one of my students will be able to participate and enjoy literature circles. Please help us purchase five copies of each: From the Notebooks of Melanin Sun, Romiette and Julio, Sisters on the Homefront, Make Lemonade, Can't Get There from Here, The Lovely Bones, Hanging on to Max, and A Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning.
