Hooray! This project is fully funded

I am a third and fourth grade teacher at Enrico Tonti Elementary in Chicago, Illinois. My school is part of the Chicago Public Schools. My students are primarily low income and Hispanic. I teach all subjects, except for art, library, music, and physical education. I have a classroom of 27 students of varying ability and learning styles. I am in the process of creating a classroom office. One of my major goals in teaching is to teach students how to be independent. The students in my classroom love to work on projects and create anything they can think of. I try to provide them with as many materials as I can. This office would allow the students to have access to many products that would help them organize their materials as well as to create great projects. The materials I am asking for are ones you would readily find available in any office. Paper, post it notes, paper clips, staplers, pencils, pens, glue, rulers, and scissors. Many of my students come to school without supplies. Their parents are not capable or do not have time to provide their children with the correct supplies. Also, supplies run out quickly. If students come to school at the beginning of the year with pencils, they may not last much past the first few months of school. I try to create my classroom as the students work environment. I want to provide them with every resource they need to become an independent worker. The students feel very grown up and professional when they paper clip their work together. The art supplies provide them with access to creating spectacular and engaging projects. My students have been learning how to use highlighters and post it notes to help themselves become better note takers and more aware readers. I think that by providing students with these resources, they become more engaged in their learning. The students want to work because they like what they are working with. It is exciting for them to use materials that are used in the work place and usually only by adults or teachers. I think that students need to have resources available to them to help them succeed. They should be given the opportunity to become independent and free workers. The students will gain confidence and appreciation for their own work. I think that providing students with ample materials allows them to explore and learn on their own as well as with others.
