Developing Self-Confidence and a Healthy Self-Esteem

I am a kindergarten classroom teacher in a Title-I, inner-city school. I have 26 children in my class and all of them deserve a chance to succeed and develop the self-confidence and self-esteem that will get them through life. My hope is that you and /or your organization will help my students in these important areas of their development by providing the materials that will allow them to become engaged in daily physical activity and promote a healthy, active lifestyle.

Childhood obesity is an epidemic; so much that it's been a "hot topic" in the news recently. The area my students come from is low-income and impoverished. Yet, we have a high rate of obesity among the students in my school. Generally, these students go home to television and video games rather than playing outside and living healthy, active lifestyles. Studies also show that the more active and healthy a child is, the better he/she feels about him/herself, thus developing self-confidence and a healthy self-esteem. Those feelings transition over into the academic world by allowing a child to feel confident about who he/she is and thus empowering him/her to make the effort to perform well in school. Conversely, those children with low self-esteems and poor self-confidence generally do not perform as well. 


Our school is on a campaign to fight childhood obesity and while the students have recess and our school has balls for them to play with, we have no structured PE curriculum. My students need structured physical activities that will help them develop their gross motor skills, learn through rhythm and movement, and learn to play games together. The materials I've requested will help us get a start in that area. I have the lesson plans, but with the recent budget cuts in education, unfortunately, I do not have the materials to successfully teach lessons in this much-needed and often-neglected area. 


You will help us support and encourage a healthy, active lifestyle among omy students and fight childhood obesity!! You will make it possible for my students to develop healthy self-esteems and gain the self-confidence they so desperately need in order to be successful in this world. A healthy body = a healthy mind!!
