We don't just sing in my music class. We act, sing, dance, play, and create. I teach music to K-8th grade students in a small, rural school district. We have managed to not consolidate with any other districts thus far and we hope to keep it that way. Because we are such a small district (625 students K-12) we cannot offer our students the same variety as larger districts. That does not mean that my students' learning should suffer.

Reader’s theater is an in-class project that brings books to life. Students will take the story "The Flying Witch," by Jane Yolen, and combine dance, drama, music, and visual art forms to bring the story to life. Using classroom instruments, their voices, bodies, and recorders, students add creative elements to the book: sound effects, chants, dance, body percussion, songs, and acting are all added to the story. The end project is an elaborately told story suitable for concert performance or a small audience.

To bring "The Flying Witch" to life, we need equipment. Through out the story one song is used to "turn the witches hut." Without a metallophone we can only sing the song. Students are capable of so much more. With a metallophone students could accompany themselves while singing as well as play the melody on the instrument. Reader’s theater involves all students within the class. Student participation is necessary for the project to come to life. All students are taught the various songs, chants, and/ or instrument parts of the project. They will perform those parts that best work for them and their skill level. This project easily allows for differentiated learning because students will experience all activities, but what they end up performing will be determined by their skill level.

Readers theater is a collaborative arts project and experience which students should all have. Without a metallophone we can only experience part of it. We need your help.
