I have been presented with an exciting opportunity to travel with my 3rd graders to the 4th grade! My class consists of 24 boys and girls who truly know the meaning of "learning community." Their personalities mesh well and they are willing to help each other learn. I have convinced my prinicipal to keep this "one of a kind" class together for a second year of learning. Research shows that classes that stay together make more gains because they have a positive attitude about school and feel secure. The teacher and students know the expectations and don't lose time learning about each other at the beginning of the 2nd year. Since this will be the first time I have taught 4th grade, I want to give my students every opportunity for success. I believe that a Summer Bridge program can benefit my students by providing exciting work to review 3rd grade skills and preview 4th grade material. I plan to provide each child with his or her own Bridge book, with daily learning activities. I will motivate my kids to complete the activities by having several incentives throughout the summer. For instance, students who complete a set number of lessons will meet as a class for skating or bowling parties. These meetings will not only celebrate the learning of the students, but will also help them develop their friendships. Both will contribute to greater learning in the fourth grade! I am looking foward to these summer meetings and the opportunity to work with my class for such an extended amount of time!
