I am Physical Education Teacher in elementary school. My state Standard Course of Study and national PE standards expand the role of PE Teacher. Besides the traditional PE class teaching, I need to teach health, nutrition, promote life long activities and involvement in health programs in community during the after school hours. At our school students have PE once a week, daily recess and after school intramural activities. Unfortunately, we have a large overweight and obese student population that needs additional program to reduce their health risks. Our nurse, counselor and I work with those kids to modify their lifestyle. We want to use pedometers to monitor those students daily exercises.

I work for a new and beautiful school but with very limited equipment and supplies. The start-up budget I received in previous academic year in amount $4.60 per student (this includes shipping and handling fees) allowed me to buy very basic supplies for my 650 students. Recent budget cuts froze monetary allocation in all areas of education. This situation forces teachers to be very creative in obtaining needed teaching tools. I am hoping to receive pedometers for our at health risk group of students to motivate them and record daily amount of their physical activity.

I conducted a Fitnessgram test which identified at health risk students. The Health Club I created for these students with assistance of school nurse and counselor will help to reduce their health risks. Students will be given guidance in nutrition, lifestyle. They will be wearing pedometer to monitor increased amount of physical activity.

Obesity is growing epidemics in our country. According to research there is very small percentage of adults who are successful in their weight loss programs. The only smart thing is to reduce this problem in childhood, before development of unhealthy eating and activity habits. Your donation you will allow my kids to get on the right path to life success.
