My school is an unscreened, under-resourced college-preparatory public high school that prepares students for post-secondary success through meaningful work and authentic inquiry across the disciplines. In addition, we provide significant college awareness to all of our students starting in the 9th grade through mandatory college preparedness courses, college trips, and advisory lessons. As the teacher of the 11th grade college awareness seminar and college adviser, I can say that this purposeful curriculum has directly resulted in a 90% graduation rate, close to an 80% matriculation rate and over $5 million in scholarship/financial aid.
However, I still face major challenges that prevent some of my students from achieving their highest potential. In particular, I have found that given that almost all of my students will be first-generation college students, they, as well as their families, lack the knowledge and resources to adequately prepare for and successfully navigate the college admissions process. As a result, students do not feel empowered to advocate for themselves throughout the process and can often become disengaged or disheartened.
In an effort to not lose students due to feelings of inferiority, I have deemed it necessary to provide each student with a tangible resource, a copy of "Admission Matters", that can be used by students to develop a personal higher-education plan. That said, students will be able to take ownership of their admission process through the acquisition of a skill-set meant as a supplement for a lack of familial college-bound culture. As a result, the level of excitement for and openness to college will increase dramatically.
As a donor, you will provide my students with the opportunity and the confidence to develop and execute a plan that has the potential to shape their lives permanently.
