I teach 9th grade Physics in a college preparatory charter school. We cater to low-income students in an urban setting. Our students work extremely hard, putting in regular ten hour days at school and then homework on top of this. They are doing all this to climb the mountain to college, where almost all of them will be first generation college graduates.
Our school just opened in July and we don't have any lab equipment. I did a clay boats lab with the students and they absolutely loved it. I really want to keep them engaged in science and do as much as I can to excite them about learning. We lack even the most basic lab equipment, and so far the labs I can do are things that require cheap materials from WalMart. I want to keep the kids excited about science, and I think that having some real science equipment will really do the trick.
Because we lack even the most basic of lab materials, this is where I would like to start. We need things such as scales, flasks and beakers. The second half of this year largely involves Chemistry topics and I would really love to be able to hook the students with experiments. If I have the basic glassware, then I can get the necessary chemicals to keep the students interested.
You're help can allow my students to experience a true lab science course. I am trying to get them ready for college science courses and being able to have a lab component to my class would really help with college readiness.
