Help me tap into the potential of interdisciplinary teaching and learning! I teach various high school History/Social Science classes, from World and U.S. History to a completely unique Political Science/Philosophy College Preparatory Elective. We are a charter school in California, serving a historically underrepresented and marginalized population in an ethnically diverse working class community. Our school is in its third year, and we are growing steadily. Our focus is both in doing all we can to get 100% of our students into college, and to also inspire and educate them to be agents for positive change both globally and locally.
As a former student and practitioner of visual and graphic arts, I am also passionate about the power of art. Art has the power to be both enlightening and transformative. It can empower us to express our concerns and desires about our world in a striking and accessible way. I continue to be deeply influenced by Diego Rivera, who expressed the emotions, struggles, and triumphs of Mexican history through his murals. It did not matter if one was literate or illiterate; anyone could learn about Mexican history by looking at his art. I have always wanted to infuse more of these elements in my history classroom.
Imagine a wall of interconnected murals...exploding in color, emotions driving each piece of art...representing the span of Mexican history, from the Aztecs to the Revolution of 1810. From the time of Juarez to Zapata to Cardenas to the present. This is our dream...to be able to express the power of history through art (other project ideas can be found below), and to challenge the depths of our imaginations. The only thing holding us back is a lack of resources.
I have listed the specific art supplies that can help make the mural project and other art projects possible.* Everything from pastels to paper, from charcoal to presentation boards will be put to use. These supplies will last many years, will be conserved with great energy, and students will be fully trained in how to use them well. I expect that students will be positively motivated to engage their creative energy to interact with their intellectual side as they are challenged to create art projects using your art supplies. This will make the learning of history deeper and more engaging for everyone.
* Other potential projects include a cubist mosaic in the style of Picasso to depict events in times of war, similar to his masterpiece: Guernica. Also, an educational memorial/tribute to the victims of genocide around the world. Some previous creations are shown in my photo. These were terrific, but they can be even bigger and bolder with your help!
I realize there are hundreds of amazing ideas proposed by just as many terrific teachers on this website. I will not claim that my request is any more important than those of other teachers. However, if you find yourself a fan of art, and a lover of history, and can see the power of helping students combine those two worlds, then your help can make this all possible. My students and I truly appreciate your time, consideration, and generosity. Thank you.
