Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a site-based public charter school in a high needs community. Approximately 80% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our school's mission is to prepare our students to meet the A-G requirements for UC and CSU eligibility. Our school emphasizes seven lifelong "habits of mind and heart" that are essential in being a valuable member of the community.
In my chemistry class I implement a practical and vocational approach to lab work. I stress the importance of accurate and precise technical skills including conversion fluency and analysis. Having enough equipment so that student:equipment ratios remain low, with each student having ample opportunity to operate equipment is essential to creating a productive professional environment.
During both my high school teaching and my summer work in a university lab, I have documented the difficulty students have completing the essential technical skills of molar conversion, percent composition and multiple proportions. The fluency that students need to exhibit to be successful at the university or professional level can only be gained through practice and consistent experience. A mass balance is a tool that is used on a regular basis throughout the entire chemistry curriculum.
Our entire science budget allots $20 per student. Considering consumables and the cost of relevant technology, every dollar matters. Your donation of a precise mass balance would certainly help the science department maintain the valuable equipment that we use on a regular basis in our labs.
