I have been in the New York City Department of Education for the past nine years. This is my first year as a Dean of Students. I'm trying to find ways to encourage and maintain positive socialization for my students during their recess time at lunch. Every day at lunch, I monitor 375 students. They either play tag, jump rope or congregate near our only working basketball hoop. Many students waiting to play basketball never get the chance. In our schoolyard we have only one working basketball net and two broken nets. I would love to give all my students a chance to enjoy themselves during their lunch period. An additional net would also allow our gym staff to initiate multiple basketball games during the school day.
Thoughts behind the idea:
1. Basketball can be divided into three levels of play: individual, one-on-one, and team. Each of these levels consists of a number of tasks, movement on the court, play options, and decision-making.
2. Students will examine the rules, the court, and game of basketball at the high school, college, and professional levels.
3. They will identify the ways that are different at these levels of play. Students will also compare and contrast the game of basketball in its early years and how it is played today.
4. Students will work on their cardiovascular and muscular endurance in a fun and motivational way.
5. Students will gain opportunities for socializing, and personal and community development.
In my experience, students need ways to help manage stress. They also require opportunities for socializing, and personal and community development. The main components of fitness endurance, strength, and flexibility can all be advanced through participation in sports, which will greatly enhance everyday living.
