I teach third grade in a school where the kids have little home support. My students are very low academically. Many have trouble reading, most are repeating third grade. In an effort to make reading more fun and give the students more individual attention, I would like to start a guided reading program with non-fiction readers from Time Magazine. These readers will expose the class to a genre of reading not found in their textbook. The stories will keep them more interested, as they are shorter and less intimidating. The pictures are vivid, and the topics, such as careers, inventions, and animals will catch the students' attention. They come as a set of 15 books with 6 readers each (a total of 90 books), a CD for enrichment, a teacher's guide, and home-school connections to involve the families. While this will allow me to work with small groups, every child will be placed in a group. My whole class of 18 will participate.
