Squirelly Freshmen just want to move! ...my ADD/ADHD students in particular! I teach a Freshman Academy English class that helps students catch up to their grade level. Rather than causing a disruption in class with their chatting and acting out, why not give them yoga balls to use instead of chairs? This will help them keep moving and keep focused.

Two ADD and three ADHD students are having a very hard time focusing on college-prep work in my class. They seem to battle the urge to participate in any other activity while they are supposed to be solely working. This is because ADD/ADHD students need to stimulate one or more of their 5 senses. My students tend to feel the need to stand, stretch and run. I thought it would be a great idea to give these students yoga balls (or exercise balls) to allow them to move around in class. This will benefit the entire class because it will minimize distractions for all students.

By providing my ADD/ADHD students with exercise balls, they will become more conscientious workers who are able to burn off some of that energy that could previously be exerted in a negative way. Currently, these students are a distraction to motivated learners as they are interrupted by side-conversations, blurting out in class and movements, such as tapping of pencils, pinching of students, leg twitching, etc.

You will help provide these 5 students with an outlet; and a tool that can help them in their future classes as well. This will, in turn, help the entire class to stay on the same page. You can strengthen a weakness! These students' grades shouldn't suffer because of ADD/ADHD.
