This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach Reading and Science at a high-need school to 5th and 6th graders. For the past few years, my school has not been able to make our growth goals as they are set by the state.
Although my school is trying to turn it around, it feels like we are continually hindered by lack of funds. Classrooms are continually underfunded, under-supplied, and under-cared for.
I think it is essential to foster a love of reading at this middle age if we expect children to excel as they reach forward to high school, and I think that creating this "Reader's Paradise" is an essential part of that. My students need a comfortable place to relax and get a true feel for reading. For this reason, I am trying to create a "Reader's Paradise" within my classroom, and the bean bag chairs are an essential part of that. Reading at their desk only reinforces the idea that "reading" is a boring school activity. Creating this comfortable space helps the students to understand that reading can be a relaxing part of their daily life.
You can make all this possible. You can help stem the tide of mediocrity at an underfunded, innercity school, and help to build a love of reading that will help my children achieve excellence.
