I teach 9th grade Physical Science at a large school in SC. We are located in a suburban/rural area with a very diverse student population.

Many of my students are "Read 180" kids who are far below grade level in reading. Due to budget cuts and the size of our student body they have become almost "The Forgotten Ones" when funds are available. This is difficult when you are expected to expose student to reading within each academic discipline.

October Sky chronicles the life of Homer Hickam and the rocket boys as they pursue a dream that many feel is academically above them as well as a foolish waste of time. Through the story and research they will discover that four unlikely boys not only gained national recognition but receive scholarships. Each of the boys gone on to become successful productive citizens.

You can become a part of helping young men and women begin to dream of the possibilities in their future. They will find courage to face challenges and overcome them even when the world tells them no.
