Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help us keep these kids out of jail.
We are the disciplinary program for our district. Most of our students have committed some crime that has placed them in our program. Most of them are into gangs and drugs. For many, we are their last chance before jail.
I teach both the middle school and high school. I mainly teach math and social studies, but like all the rest of the teachers here, I also teach PE.
Even though we are expected to teach all subjects to six different grade levels, our program receives minimal funding. PE is the last of the subjects to receive money, but we are still expected to provide the class. One of the games that the students enjoy is softball. They love to play, but we don't have much in the way of equipment. We are expected to help these kids believe in themselves and turn their lives around, but there is just not enough money for what we need.
If we could provide the students with the gloves and balls, they would realize that somebody does care what happens to them. We can show them that they don't need the drugs and the gangs to make them feel like something. This program could really change lives.
