Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

¡Saludos del Valle! I am a high school science teacher in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, right along the U.S.-Mexico border. I just completed my first year in the classroom as a Teach for America corps member. Although my students are rich in culture and community, they have limited financial resources. All of our students are served free breakfast and lunch at the school.

My students are extremely bright and bursting with potential, but they have some well-ingrained bad habits when it comes to school. I discovered that investing my students in science and in their education is a challenging year-long process. Luckily, I am super nerdy when it comes to science, and I managed to rub some of it off on my students. Much to a teacher’s chagrin, there are always those “wasted days” – early release the day before vacations, extra periods after TAKS testing, etc. Those days, a teacher cannot do much other than play games or show movies. I prefer to sneak some science into those days by showing science or nature documentaries. As a child who grew up without cable television, I LOVE science documentaries. As children of the 1990’s, my students live for television and movies...among other technologies. At first, my students thought that they were too cool for documentaries - “Nah, Miss! Can’t we watch Transformers or something?!” But after a few episodes of Planet Earth and Life of Mammals, they were hooked! I even had students ask to stay after school or during lunch so that they could watch more.

When I first had the idea of showing my students science documentaries, I thought that our school library would likely have some of the classics. I was shocked and horrified to find, however, that the library had nothing. Last year, I was able to find a few documentaries at the local library or video store. This year, I am determined to stock my school’s library with the classics. With an in-school science documentary library, teachers will have educational and science-related movies to show our students...instead of Transformers. Given my students’ enthusiastic interest in science documentaries, I also wanted to offer a weekly Science Masterpiece Theater after school for students. Our school is in a small town and there is not much to do for fun. Students frequently attend Saturday school and tutorials just to have something to do. My students would love an afternoon at the Science Masterpiece Theater – munching on popcorn while they watch science come to life.

Thank you so much for taking an interest in my students and their learning. Investing my high school students in science and in their education is a challenging and lengthy process, and exposing them to science through a medium that is both engaging and familiar facilitates that process. I cannot wait to see my students’ inner science nerd emerge as they lose themselves in epic landscapes and David Attenborough’s serene narration. Thank you again!
