Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am the Art teacher at a small Title I public elementary school that is located across the street from the housing projects where my wonderful students live. I often like to talk to my students about the many career opportunities that their city has to offer them. We discuss all aspects of being an artist, and this is when other art related roles come up. For example, my students are very proud of the work that they do in the Art room, and they love to see it displayed. This is a perfect opportunity to discuss how artists care for their work, and also the role of the museum preparator, who gets art ready for display. Artists take great care in displaying their work, and I would like my students to participate in this process with their own work. Currently, they are mounting their work on construction paper, but it’s sometimes difficult for them to center and level their work correctly on the paper. In addition, construction paper fades during the time that their artwork is displayed. These would not be issues if they used paper mats, and every student would be successful at framing their own artwork. In order to properly display the students’ work, we would need paper mats in different sizes. By funding this proposal, you would not only help students care for their work like an artist or a museum preparator, but you would also play a role in beautifying our school. What a cheerful environment their artwork would create!
