Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students. The school is in the inner city. Most of my students are considered to live below the poverty level, however their spirit is rich with love and respect for me and each other.

One day, I corrected one of the girls on the way she was sitting (with a skirt on). That moment sparked a lengthy conversation about manners and etiquette. It told me a lot about the confusing messages the media sends and gave me insight about my girls' self esteem.

Some people feel that manners and etiquette should be taught at home. Unfortunately, for some girls, there isn't any one at home to talk to. So, we started a Girls Etiquette Club after school. We read and talk about manners and maturity. We need a small variety of books to reference and journals to track their feelings and growth.

My goal is not to make a bunch of 21st century Emily Post look-a-likes, but to help girls feel proud of themselves, respect themselves, and love themselves. You can help raise the self esteem of a young girl by supporting this project. Thanks in advance!
