Elmo's World

No money? You can probably go to the nearest payday location and get some quick cash! No food? You can probably pull out some change and go to the nearest fast food restaurant. Although many middle class Americans suffer from the above circumstances, this is the typical life of many of my students. The only difference is that these students suffer from much worse circumstances such as crime, gang threats, no electricity, and the lack of food and basic necessities, yet with no way to improve their situations. These same students certainly have no technology at home with which they can enhance their academic performances. It is critical, therefore, that the only hope they have, which is the two free meals at school, the smiles on the faculty and staff, and the needed technology, such as the Elmo, stay sufficient and up-to-date within the classrooms.

The world which the Elmo document camera offers is an endless one with infinite opportunities for my students. With a changing world, the students who reside in such demeaning situations are continuously getting behind in the fast paced race of education, and are constantly eating dust from the fast-spinning wheels of technology. Although the thought of having technology is idealistic, especially for these lagging students, the funds provided for education and technology are extremely scarce. I am actively scraping my own small personal money to find enough pennies for the basic classroom necessities for my students. With such a financial crisis, I certainly have no means of providing this significant yet vital piece of technology.

My students are sure to expand into a world of understanding, visual acuity, and increasing levels of comprehension after they are introduced to, and have used, the Elmo document camera. The features offered with this technology can introduce students to a whole new range of skills and methods at great convenience for the learning styles of the children. Students will be able to see, in more detail, the lessons, ideas, and explanations of concepts which are sometimes so hard for them to grasp. Some examples include student writing samples which can be displayed as explanations for others to use in beginning the writing process. Another example is when I will actually be using various math manipulatives, such as cubes and blocks, for adding. Here, the students can visualize the concept, rather than the teacher trying to orally explain it, or having them move around so that the students may possibly see what is being explained in the lesson. The Elmo has a great variety of opportunities which extend directly to student learning.

You will be the greatest superhero for our students by providing this essential piece of technology! Thanks to you, my students-your future leaders- will be prepared and equipped with the sufficient basic and technological needs that they need in order to survive the world of education. Join us in creating this galaxy of opportunities and hopes-a planet of conquering fears and defeating failure-Elmo’s World.
