I love where I teach and what I teach because I get to see all 600+ students at my school. The school is set in the suburbs of a major city. I teach music to all students in grades 1-5, and I am fortunate enough to be able to see the kids grow through the years. At each grade level we have a pretty substantial curriculum ranging from the simple idea of rhythms and playing simple classroom instruments to studying about the historical aspects of music. The school that I teach at is really a wonderful community of teachers that really look beyond the test to the student and the person that they are going to become. The children and parents are constantly complimenting us in our efforts to encourage them.

When we use technology in the music classroom, the students are automatically interested. Adding a twist to a long standing project last year, I video taped the 5th grade commercials that the students created and made a jingle for. It was like the project took on a whole different face, with the kids taking so much more time to create a catchy product and a catchy song to be able to show to the other students. The same thing happens when I want to create centers for children to learn about different aspects of diverse cultures and music. There are plenty of resources online that I try to show the students in class, as a whole, but so many would like to work in partners to research them on their own. Or in the case of the commercials or the songs that other grades created, the students have suggested to me that they record themselves or be allowed to film themselves. This can't happen with our limited resources. As we have a rather large student body, computer lab time is not very available. Since I see the students of different grade levels at different times, being able to use technology that we have doesn't happen either.

If I was able to receive two netbooks in the classroom, the students would be able to do so much! My younger students could use it as a center station to explore different things at their own pace, differentiating learning to their own needs. My older students could use it to record the songs that they have created and edit them to share with other classes in our school or with other schools around the country that do similar projects. It takes out the problems of scheduling and puts music in an important place. It allows the students to become more comfortable with where technology is headed in the future.

You will help my students share and explore their creativity and also empower me to create more engaging centers and activities for each of my children. The addition of this technology to the music classroom that you could provide would be a WONDERFUL tool for my students to use.
