Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 5th grade bilingual teacher in PS 70 X in the Bronx, a very poor and underprivileged area in the South Bronx. Entering my classroom I had very few basic materials including books. The books that I had were on a much higher level than what my children could read since we are a bilingual education class. Many of my students came in with very low levels in English or they are simply now learning the English language. Many students recently coming from the Dominican Republic were completely illiterate.
As a result, I am pleading for books that are on the level of my students and that can be used to advance them to an even higher level. I am planning on implementing a very rigorous balanced literacy model to really get my children associated with the English language and get them prepared for their future in middle school and beyond.
In order to really get this off the ground, I need an assortment of books that are on different levels since the levels in my classroom vary from student to student.
In the end though, I honestly just want my children to love reading and be successful in this country. The only way to do so is to get them to understand the language and be a fully literate group of children. Any help would be most appreciated not just by me but by my 31 students that desperately need the help.
