The biggest warning former students give my current students: beware of Ms. Alfandre's projects! Indeed, my projects are usually big, but they are also lots of fun and very educational. I teach 10th grade English in a public school in Louisiana and the majority of my students are low income and have a reading level somewhere between 4th grade and 8th grade. Many of my students have not read a complete novel--cover to cover--in their entire life. Many have only gone to a library when their teacher has taken them.

Grabbing my students' attention is easy for me--they say I remind them of a cheerleader after 3-4 Red Bull's! Now you're probably thinking that my issue is sparking student interest in reading--nope, that's not it. Getting them interested is easy. Even getting them excited about sharing their book interests is easy, The problem is, once they are interested and ready to create a great book project, we have to scavenge for project supplies.

The best solution to my problem is providing the project supplies to my students. They could have every material right at their fingertips. Their creativity would not be stifled. Not to mention, the better the project, the more students will become interested in reading the books on which their peers are presenting. Specifically, we need tri-fold poster boards. Each group of students will need 2 of these posterboards--they will glue them together to make a giant book cover display. This display will be used to entice their fellow classmates to come to their table at the book bazaar. They also need craft supplies such as glue, glitter, and markers to decorate the book cover display. Lastly, our class needs a camera so that they can film their book "commercials." The commercials are a great way for my students to work on there public speaking abilities, improve their argumentative and persuasive techniques, and learn how to use technology. Plus, they love seeing their commercials "published" on TeacherTube. Help my students share their love of reading!

Please help empower my students to create amazing presentations. You can help a 16 year old student on a 4th grade reading level discover a love and joy for reading and help them share that love with 100s of students in their school. Please help me help them! Let's make reading cool!
