Our third grade could greatly benefit from the donation of four LeapPad reading machines and books. This would help many of our students who need extra help in reading. Many of our students are new to our school due to moving from New Orleans, LA to Houston, TX because of hurricane Katrina. These students need something special to encourage them and show them that learning can be fun. Students who are good readers know that books themselves can be fun and can take you on adventures. The students that are struggling readers get frustrated and give up easily. They have not had successful learning experiences and have started to turn off the desire to continue on their road to education. I feel that learning begins with reading. When their reading falls behind their other learning falls behind. The LeapPad could help fill in the learning gaps. I would use the LeapPad machines along with guided reading and individual one on one tutoring. These machines would be shared with other third grade teachers who have similar students. I am a third grade teacher in Houston, Texas. Currently, I am teaching reading and social studies. Our school is economically and culturally diverse with 79% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch and 24% with English as a their second language. Our school has more Katrina students then any other school in the Houston area. This would help make those students' learning not only fun but also help with reading skills. Thank you!
