Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

As an eighth grade special education teacher, I notice that reading and writing are very difficult for my students. Many of them suffer from language processing disabilities such as dyslexia and central auditory processing disorder. These types of disabilities make creating and forming words an arduous process. I work with my students to improve their word visualization and spelling skills by using a multi-sensory phonics-based reading program. They are now learning the basic structures and sounds of letters and words in the English language and are having their first successes reading and writing. However, my students still a struggle and are several grade levels behind their peers. The ReadingPen would help empower my students?reading. This hand held reading device scans, defines, translates and pronounces unknown words for the struggling reader. It will help my students who struggle to read by adding immediate auditory reinforcement. This device has the ability to sharpen students?fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, pronunciation and spelling. My students would use the ReadingPen every day in my classroom during silent sustained reading. It would give them the independence and confidence to tackle more difficult texts because instead of having to ask me how to sound out a word, they could find the answer for themselves. Struggling readers and writers need extra support to help them be successful and independent. The ReadingPen would give both of these to my students. Thank you for considering my proposal.
