I teach a self-contained special education class. My students are first, second and third graders, with a variety of disabilities, challenges and strengths.

Social skills and impulse control are difficult for my students with autism and ADD/ADHD to grasp. The main concern I hear from most of my parents is that they want their child to improve their social skills. Basic social skills and impulse control are the characteristics that will help their children be successful in inclusion situations and eventually help them function in society.

My students learn best through multi-sensory programs. I need visual materials, like the picture book I requested, which has many pictures of social situations for students to study. I also need tactile materials, such as the social skills board games and the book of social skills activities. The activity book also has worksheets students can take home, so that parents can carry over lessons with them in home situations. Finally, the biggest reward my students can receive is praise, so I would like to use the pocket chart to recognize those students who have excelled in managing their behaviors and display good citizenship.

With these materials, I believe my students will thrive in new social environments and parents will have more confidence to introduce their children to new social situations and experiences.
