This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am hoping to receive funds for a 20 gallon freshwater ecosystem for my Kindergarten class. The students will be involved in the entire set-up process, from the cycling of the tank, to the introduction of freshwater plants and fish. We will conduct online research to determine which plants and fish can live together, and the class will vote on new tank inhabitants! The students will take turns serving as our "Plant and Pet Monitor" helping to clean the tank, measure plant growth, and feed the fish.
Each student also will produce an aquarium journal with sketches of the evolving ecosystem, notes on temperature, water change and plant growth, and writings on their favorite tank inhabitants.
There are several benefits of this proposal....
1. This will be a year-long, hands-on science project demonstrating what an ecosystem is, and how delicate it is to maintain. This experience will also be connected to larger environmental issues, and the importance of taking care of the earth.
2. It will give the students a sense of responsibility both inside and outside of the classroom.
3. It will greatly enhance our classroom environment.
4. At the end of the year, the children will vote on a charitable organization to donate the aquarium as their class gift (such as an orphanage, children's shelter, or children's hospital). The bulk of the materials will lay the foundation for next year's project with a new class.
