Each year our school West Wilkes Middle has a pumpkin decorating contest. The event is fun for the entire school. We usually go out to the local market or the local farmers and purchase our pumpkins to decorate. This can be very costly. This coming spring of 2006, we hope to start our own pumpkin patch.
The students in the 8th grade Health Education classes will prepare and plant the pumpkin seeds in the spring, and we will hopefully harvest the full grown pumpkins in the fall. We have researched and found out that the pumpkins should be in a sunny area. We have the sunny area picked out. It is right outside of our Health room.
Our goal is to give the pumpkins to each roundtable (homeroom) teacher for their class to decorate in the fall of 2006. We will also use the pumpkins to prepare many Healthy snacks in our health class. Such as: baked pumpkin seeds, pumpkin bread, and pumpkin

The students will learn the nutritional value of the pumpkins. My classroom has 2 kitchens in it. The students will prepare the above foods themselves. The students will also learn the value and enjoyment of gardening.
Our community is a rural community. We have local farmers who will plow and prepare the land for us. The items we will need are: pumpkin seeds, fertilizer, hoes, rakes, shovels, and watering cans. The students will also that gardening is exercise. The students will have much more pride in the pumpkins they decorate if they grew and took care of them. The students will watch the pumpkins throughout the summer, a committee of pumpkin caretakers will be assigned. I will be responsible for supervising these students. This
project will impact the entire school as we monitor and care for the growing pumpkins. We hope this will be so successful that the project will continue year after year.
