"A room without books is like a body without a soul." ~ Marcus T. Cicero
I teach 11th and 12th grade English in a rural high school. Our population is made up of a large percentage of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. We have been under "School Improvement" by the Alabama Department of Education for the past 4 years because we have been unable to make sufficient progress in our students' reading scores and improve our drop-out rate.
The majority of students I teach arrive to the high school reading at or below the 6th grade level. An obstacle that I am trying to overcome is getting my students interested in reading more expository and nonfiction text.
For my college-bound students, expository and non-fiction text is something they will encounter on a daily basis. I need to teach them the skills to read, comprehend, and analyze this type of text. My students also need direction. Many of them have no career goals or even plans for the future that awaits them upon graduation. These two magazines will be tools that I can use to help my students improve reading skills and focus on career goals.
I realize that magazine subscriptions must seem trivial, but often magazines are the only thing that some of my students will actually attempt to read. If I can offer them magazines that will interest and inspire them, it might be just enough to help them be successful in college and in their careers. Your support will be more than just a magazine; it will be an opportunity to empower the future generation.
