I teach a wonderful bunch of 1st grade students. These students come from many different backgrounds - military families, low and high income families, single parent families - and the list goes on. Each student is special in his or her own way and each student is on a different educational level. My school has implemented a morning meeting block and a math block. During this time of the day, we rely heavily on our classroom calendar. Many different skills can be learned from just on little calendar - days, months, time, place value, estimation, and much, much more. My current calendar is just not up to par anymore. My students would benefit from having a calendar pocket chart. These calendars have much more than the typical days and months - they have places for students to interact with tens/ones rods, hundreds boards, money, tally marks and problem solving. By having a calendar that can be used throughout the year - teaching new skills as they arise from our curriculum will allow for my students to have continual practice to master first grade math skills. With your help and support, my students will be given the opportunity to continue their mathematical learning throughout the day - not just during math time!
