Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at an under-resourced urban school in the Bronx which houses kindergarten through eighth grade. I also teach test preparation for older students at our after-school and Saturday-school academy.
While getting ready to leave for the day, a group of my former students (who are now fifth graders) began admiring the scarf I was wearing. When I told the students that I had knitted it myself, they became very excited and wondered if I could teach them how to knit. One conversation with my assistant principal later, and it turns out that my students and I will be forming a knitting club! So far, 15 students have signed up to join the club, and we are all excited to get our materials and get underway!
Now, this knitting club will not only be for the enjoyment of learning a new craft or building self-esteem by engaging in an activity with peers, but also for teaching students about the importance of contributing to their community and helping others! I have found several organizations on the Internet that accept hand-knitted squares to be made into afghans for those in need in our community and world-wide. In addition, there are several organizations that accept hand-knitted baby booties and baby blankets for premature, ill, and homeless infants. With your help, students will be able to create tangible, useful, and necessary gifts for others. Wow! What a way to mold our students, our future, into passionate, humanitarian citizens!
