Our fourth grade science curriculum includes several inquiry standards that require the use of equipment such as microscopes. We have videos and books at our disposal, however I feel that children need a hands-on experience in order to fully understand many of the ideas and concepts. I would like my 23 students to conduct experiments using microscopes in their data collection process. One such activity would be testing water from local ponds and analyzing what they discover. Expectations for students are always increasing, yet teachers and students are trying to make due without adequate tools. Our district is considered the poorest district in the state of South Carolina. I feel that by providing these microscopes, the donor would also be providing a love of learning and a sense of exploration for many children. Although many of my students have learning disabilities, the use of the computer microscope would enable them to participate in the lessons to the fullest extent. In order to accomplish my goal, I would like to purchase one student microscope and one computer microscope. These would be used in several lessons throughout the units and would benefit many children throughout the years.
