I am a first year special education teacher. I have 18 students in middle school who have learning disabilities in reading, writing, and/or math. Our school is in a growing rural area. At the beginning of the school year, we grew by 100 students the week before school started. Therefore, more money had to be spent on regular classroom materials and less money was available for books that my students need in Corrective Reading. Also, being a first year teacher and single mother of three, I have little money of my own to spend to buy these supplies.
My students with disabilities in reading are in 7th and 8th grade, but can only read on a 2nd to 4th grade level. However, they are expected to read textbooks on their own grade level. This causes these students to experience many failures in their acacdemic areas. I want to be able to use SRA Corrective Reading to allow these students to experience success. During my student teaching, I was able to see great success with this program and I would now like to implement the same program in my classroom.
The SRA Corrective Reading program has three different levels of instruction in decoding words and reading comprehension. I have student books in the first two levels (B1 and B2) of decoding, but am in need of workbooks in these two levels. I would also appreciate student books and workbooks in level C in the area of comprehension. Information on this program can be found at www.sra4kids.com.
