This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Help us to learn from the past so that we can prepare for a better future!
I teach Government to high school students who are almost all African American and come from very low economic backgrounds. Thanks to some generous donors, many of our students will be college bound, and I need to make sure they are fully prepared. Our school has some unfortunate limitations that hinder our ability to educate the students to the best of our abilities. One main problem is that we do not have a functioning library in our building that would allow students to read and research information.
Our students need the opportunity to read books other than just textbooks and research information that is relevant to them and our curriculum. My students have a strong interest in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, and I'd like to provide the opportunity for them to learn more and understand the struggle many Americans went through during this time period to provide my own students the freedoms that they enjoy today.
My students will need a variety of books that show the struggles and successes of people during the Civil Rights Movement. Having these books will be useful in improving the reading and research skills that are necessary for not only their high school education but also for their college education. Many of our students struggle with research skills and with a very limited number of books available for students, I am unable to help them in this area as much as I would like to.
Many of my students will be the first in their families to attend college. I need to ensure that they are fully prepared. I have purchased some books on my own, but I need assistance in providing my students with a classroom library that will meet both the needs of our curriculum as well as the interests of my students.
Please help my students build the skills necessary to be successful in their education as well as in their futures. Your help will make it possible for my students to improve the skills necessary to be successful both in their education as well as their lives. Being able to provide reading materials to my students will not only help their researching skills, but it will also help their reading and literacy skills. Many of our students have below grade level reading abilities. Providing my students with material that they are interested in will be a great way to engage them in reading and learning. Please consider helping my students now and for years to come.
