Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way - things I had no words for.” -Georgia O'Keeffe
In my job, I expand ways my students can communicate and comprehend the world. This tends to be challenging at my Title I at-risk school, whose students come from immigrant backgrounds or Hurricanes Katrina and Ike displacement. I teach World Cultures to an estimated 170 of such students, including ones who have not successfully passed the 6th grade before. To give my students more opportunities to creatively learn, charitable funding would make a significant impact on my students` futures.
Much of my personal salary already has gone towards class prizes and paper copying, leaving little left to dedicate towards student supplies. On any given day, I'm trying to build Geography, Math, History, Reading and Writing Skills, so art supplies help visual learners, students with reading disabilities, and ESL learners better comprehend material. In addition, the children do not receive much academic motivation at home. That forces teachers and administrators to find an even greater variety of strategies to hook students on learning.
The art supplies will help my students create individual ABC books from all the material that they've learned this year. They will color pictures and write descriptions to go with the 26 most important words that they chose. That way, students will have an at-home resource to use when they approach 7th and 8th grade social studies material.
Remember...in America, all students should have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. Help me and my students to create an experience that shows learning can be fun and productive at the same time.
