Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Digging into age appropriate, relevant reading in a science content strengthens my students literacy skills and allows them to transfer strategies to a new content. I teach 8th grade science in a rural, high-needs school district. My students are nearly all minority and at least half of them are from migrant families and are second language English speakers.
These students face real life challenges not just in the future, but every day. As migrant or second language learners opportunities are harder to come by. Our students are pushed hard in literacy since we have historically low scored on our state's standardized tests in this area. Our school is always looking for ways to extend literacy to all content areas. Since my students get lots of focused attention in this area, often other content areas are neglected. With lower reading skills, finding appropriate supplemental reading for my science classroom can be challenging. I need a resource that is accessible to my students, discusses current technology and news, and makes science relevant to my students.
Weekly Reader creates a great resource that answers all these needs. Their magazine has current, engaging articles on a variety of topics to supplement our curriculum. The articles provide opportunities for my students to practice their language skills in the science content as we use many reading strategies and graphic concept mapping skills with the stories. Transferring these "language" skills to science class not only strengthens the skill, but also reinforces the fact that knowledge in one area is not a stand-alone skill. One other great benefit of the Weekly Reader resource is the career connections. Each issue highlights jobs, opportunities and applications that inspire students to plan for their future. This is particularly motivating for my students who do not have many of these examples to follow.
When you support this project, you are supporting futures and dreams for my underprivileged students. You build in them the confidence to use their education in ways they never though possible before.
